Romans 12:21
Do not be conquered by evil but conquer evil with good.
Ok so I know a few months back I mentioned that I’ve been in a groove of jamming out to Christian kids music in our home and wouldn’t you believe it, all these songs give me so much to ponder, they’re so simple that they speak to my childlike heart in a really basic way. There’s this one song called Not Afraid. And the main line of the song goes, “I’m not afraid of the dark, the dark’s afraid of me,” and at first listen I thought this was silly but then it got me thinking, is there truth to this?… “the dark” of course being evil and the evil one… of course I know I don’t need to be afraid of the Devil but could he, could evil, be afraid of me? I’m just a measly human.
But if you know me, you know exactly where my mind went first here… besides the almighty God, there is one thing Satan fears most, one person… you guessed it, Mama Mary. He can’t even withstand the saying of her name.
When one makes a consecration of oneself to the Blessed Mother, one of the things they are seeking is complete unification with her, for her to take possession of them, for them to be made into another replica of her. When we unite ourselves to Mary, we too bring fear to Satan. We too become a source for the extinguishing of the Darkness. By simply consecrating ourselves to the Blessed Mother we conquer evil with good. If you haven’t done this already, I highly recommend the book 33 Days to Morning Glory by Fr. Michael Gaitley. It’s an incredible Marian consecration experience.
In closing, I’ll leave you with one last thought about all of this… My husband happened to walk in from work one day when this song was on and bless him he is such a practical analytical guy… he said, “Well this song doesn’t make sense, there’s no such thing as the dark, there’s only the absence of light”. And after I got done shaking my head, I smiled because there’s beauty in that perspective too. We prevent ourselves from being conquered by evil by ensuring the light never goes out. By keeping Jesus and Mary as close as we can. And in doing this, may you know you need not fear the dark, it’s the dark that’s afraid of you.
