The Seven Joys of Mary devotion is a rosary of sorts and is very similar to the traditional rosary but instead of having 5 decades of 10 Hail Marys it has 7, and the mysteries of each of these decades are the 7 major joys of Mary. So it will feel similar to the traditional rosary where you announce the mystery and then reflect on it while praying 10 Hail Marys. Then it closes with 2 additional Hail Marys and then one Hail Mary and one Our Father for the intentions of the Pope.
This rosary comes from the Franciscans in 1422. It is said that a certain novice, before joining the Order, was accustomed to place a crown on a statue of the Blessed Virgin. When he was not allowed to continue this practice he resolved to leave the Order. Then Mary appeared to him and dissuaded him, telling him he could offer a much more pleasing crown by reciting a the new devotion in honor of her Seven Joys.
